Greg Hannon is a retired small business owner and understands what it takes to run a successful small business during these tough economic times.
"A tough economy means making tough choices. Our Village Board has maintained a balanced budget for the past 20+ years courage to cut 4.4 million dollars from the budget during the last two years while providing outstanding services to our residents," states Greg Hannon.
A resident of the 19th District for 35 years, Gregory J. Hannon has consistently provided leadership for his local community, proving that hard work, dedication and collaboration can influence positive changes in the South Side.
Hannon was elected Tinley Park Village Trustee in 1987. As a longstanding local champion, Hannon has established a strong record of accomplishment. He continues to lead a community that was named BusinessWeek's "Best Places in America to Raise Kids" because of its top-rated schools, low crime, beautiful parks, and easy access to jobs. During more than 2 decades as Trustee, Hannon served as Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Committee. In this role, he established the first ever village-wide recycling program which resulted in thousands of pounds of recyclables eliminated from local landfills. Hannon also led the growth and expansion of both residential and commercial properties in Tinley Park. This included working with major developers to establish new and sustainable commercial & retail properties; developing and leading Tinley Park's downtown revitalization project; and serving as Committee Member for the Convention Center Expansion. Hannon also oversees and manages all Tinley Park planning and zoning to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its residences.
Beyond his chairmanship of the Planning and Zoning Committee, Hannon played a critical role in the broader development and evolution of Tinley Park, which for the past 24 years has maintained a balanced budget of over $40M. He was instrumental in helping fund a fiscally-responsible village-wide pension plan for union employees without a single tax increase to Tinley Park residences. As a firm believer in the power of local economic growth, he also has a proven record in helping expand Tinley Park's economy through his work with small business. He helped utilize and prioritize TIF dollars to re-invest back into the local community to help encourage and finance small businesses.
Beyond a role as public servant, Hannon was also a successful small business owner in Chicago. A Licensed Illinois Professional Land Surveyor, Hannon served as President of Chicago Guarantee Survey Company, a land surveying company founded in 1872 that helped make Chicago the thriving city it is today. Throughout his years as President he grew the business by 50 percent, through innovative solutions involving new problem-solving technology and workplace efficiency. He worked with major developers to create Chicago high-rises, office complexes, and new hotels; and played a key role in the transformation of the South Loop. Hannon served as an advocate for change throughout various organizational leadership roles. These have included; President of the Jaycees (a leadership training organization) and President of the Willow Lane Homeowners Association where he worked with village officials solving neighborhood problems. Friends and family describe Hannon as an average guy with a "roll up the sleeves and get it done" attitude. In retirement, he continues a strong commitment to his professional field as a member of the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association, National Society of Professional Surveyors and American Congress of Surveying and Mapping.
Hannon and his wife, Cathy, have been married for 36 years. Cathy is also heavily involved in the community, currently serving as Tinley Park Library Board President. They have two daughters, Allison and Amy and two son-in-laws, Mike and Joe. In January, Greg will take on a new role as Grandpa when his oldest daughter welcomes a new child to the family.
